ABSTRACT: Conidiobolomycosis is an emerging disease caused by fungi of the cosmopolitan genus Conidiobolus . Particular strains of Conidiobolus coronatus, Conidiobolus incongruus and Conidiobolus lamprauges , mainly from tropical or sub-tropical origin, cause the mycosis in humans and animals, domestic or wild. Lesions are usually granulomatous and necrotic in character, presenting two clinical forms: rhinofacial and nasopharyngeal. This review includes the main features of the disease in sheep, with an emphasis on the epidemiology, clinical aspects, and diagnosis of infections caused by Conidiobolus spp. in Brazil. In this country, the disease is endemic in the Northeast and Midwest, affecting predominantly woolless sheep breeds and occasioning death... |

Also known as phycomycoses, pythiosis and zygomycosis are mycotic diseases with very similar morphological and histopathological features, and occur in skin, subcutaneous tissue, GI tract and lungs, mainly in horses. The etiological agents are soil and vegetation saprophytes present in swamps. Horses acquire the infection by remaining in these areas, in contact with the soil, favoring the occurrence of infected granulomatous lesions mainly in the distal portion of the limbs, ventral region of thea bdomen, chest and neck, with severe pruritus, ulceration, and viscous and abundant serosanguineous secretion. Several methods are used to treat these mycoses, surgical excision associated with amphotericin B being the most important. However, new adjuvant... |

A 9-month-old steer was autopsied due to recurrent ruminal tympany. A macroscopic examination found an enlarged caudal mediastinal lymph node, and a section of the lymph node revealed necrosis with marked calcification, similar to tuberculous lymphadenitis. Histopathologically, the lesion consisted of multiple coagulative necrotic foci and fibrosis with macrophage, lymphocyte, eosinophil and multinucleated giant cell infiltration. Non-uniform width hyphae were detected in the necrotic area and within the cytoplasm of the multinucleated giant cells, and they were found to be anti-Rhizopus arrhizus antibody positive in an immunohistochemical examination. Therefore, the steer was diagnosed with necrotic caudal mediastinal lymphadenitis due to zygomycetes... |
